Felix Bonfils was a French photographer and writer who was active
in the Middle East. Born on March 8 1831 and died in 1885. He is
best known for his photographs of Lebanon,Egypt,Palestine,Syria,
Greece, and Constantinople (now Istanbul).

Camera Work was a quarterly journal published from 1903-1917 by Alfrd Stieglitz. It was composed of photogravures tipped into each copy by hand. The paper that this print was tipped on has been removed and there is a small hole in the margin under the image.

first generation of color practitioners. A celebrated New
York portraitist and advertising photographer he worked for
Vogue,Vanity Fair,and Harper's Bazaar among others. In
June 1931 Ladies' Home Journal reproduced 2 of his color
photographs of beach attire. This was the first magazine
reproduction made from an original four color print.

photographs are represented in many
collections including The George Eastman
House of Rochester,Center for Creative
Photography in Arizona, R.I.T, Cornell
university and the National Gallery of
Australia. In 1997 he was awarded a Ph.D
at the University of Sydney.
